例句-1：Well, it was no great shakes. The story was mediocre and the acting was just so-so. I was bored except for that new actress - she can’t act but she’s a beautiful woman.

這里他用了習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)no great shakes表示這電影毫不出色、相當(dāng)平庸。
我們?cè)俾?tīng)個(gè)例子。這段話在談運(yùn)動(dòng)，說(shuō)話的人最心愛(ài)的棒球隊(duì)是波士頓的紅襪隊(duì)，只是聽(tīng)來(lái)紅襪隊(duì)今年的戰(zhàn)績(jī)讓他很掃興。
例句-2：I thought the Red Sox had a real chance to win the World Series this year after so long without a championship. But they turned out to be no great shakes, just like last year.
他說(shuō)：我原以為紅襪隊(duì)那么久沒(méi)有得過(guò)冠軍，今年一定有可能在世界職業(yè)棒球錦標(biāo)賽中贏得勝利，但是他們卻和去年一樣成績(jī)平平。
這里的no great shakes意思是成績(jī)平平，并不出人頭地。聽(tīng)來(lái)這個(gè)失望的球迷只能耐心地再等上一年了。
今天要學(xué)的第二個(gè)習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)是：shake a leg。在Shake a leg這個(gè)習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)里，shake顯然是個(gè)動(dòng)詞，照字面意思看shake a leg就是晃動(dòng)一條腿。我們聽(tīng)下面的例子來(lái)捉摸習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)shake a leg是什么意思吧。這是大學(xué)生在叫醒早上貪睡不起的室友Bob。注意他話里的shake a leg：
例句-3：Bob! Hey, Bob, wake up! It’s already 9:30 and you’ve got that big math test at 10 o’clock. Come on, man, shake a leg! Come on, - you’ve got to get moving right now!
他使勁叫醒Bob，因?yàn)橐呀?jīng)到九點(diǎn)半了，而B(niǎo)ob十點(diǎn)有數(shù)學(xué)大測(cè)驗(yàn)。時(shí)間緊迫，所以他要Bob必須立刻行動(dòng)起來(lái)。
顯然他說(shuō)shake a leg，是催促Bob趕快行動(dòng)。這就是這個(gè)習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)的意思。
再聽(tīng)個(gè)例子。說(shuō)話的人正焦灼不安地在房間里來(lái)回踱步，又一而再、再而三地看手表，他終于按捺不住，對(duì)在里屋磨蹭個(gè)沒(méi)完沒(méi)了的太太發(fā)話了，注意他話里也用了shake a leg：
例句-4：Honey, we’d better shake a leg. The wedding is at eleven and it takes an hour to drive there. It’s already 10:15 so we better get moving because we’re already late!
他和太太要去參加定在十一點(diǎn)舉行的婚禮。他們開(kāi)車(chē)去那兒要一個(gè)鐘點(diǎn)。而現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)十點(diǎn)一刻了。他催促太太趕快開(kāi)步走，因?yàn)樗麄円呀?jīng)晚了。
這段話里的習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)shake a leg意思顯然也是趕快行動(dòng)，可見(jiàn)shake a leg是用來(lái)催促旁人加快行動(dòng)的。它是非正式把你叫做白癡，你確實(shí)就是個(gè)白癡，我為你感到難過(guò)。
