The secret of being a saint
Once upon a time there lived in a country a do-gooder. The king was very appreciative of his deeds and decided to honour him as a saint by a decree. On the saint’s eightieth birthday, the king was invited to his birthday celerbration. He brought with him a painter so as to do a picture of the kindly saint as a paragon for his countrymen.
When the feast is over all the guests were asked to have a look at the picture. To their great surprise, when the picture was shown, what they saw was not a kind but a ruthless and cruel look. The king was very angry at seeing this and ordered his men to beat the painter.
Upon hearing the noise, the saint rushed to the scene to have a look at the picture. After viewing it, the saint knelt down and said, "your majesty, the person in the picture is none other than me." Why?" said the king, dumbfounded. "This has been the very person whom I have never wanted to be."
In this world, there are no naturally born saints; only those who can do self-criticism and sel-examination, can become saints.

從前，在一個(gè)國(guó)家里，有一位做了無(wú)數(shù)善事的善心者。國(guó)王非常欣賞他的善舉，便封他為圣者。
有一天，圣者過(guò)八十大壽，國(guó)王前來(lái)慶賀，特別帶來(lái)一位畫(huà)家，想通過(guò)畫(huà)家的筆，將這位圣者慈祥的容貌畫(huà)下來(lái)，作為世人的典范。
用完晚餐之后，眾多的嘉賓前來(lái)觀賞這幅慈愛(ài)的畫(huà)。肖像畫(huà)家將這幅畫(huà)像拿出來(lái)的時(shí)候，所有人大吃一驚。因?yàn)楫?huà)里的人根本沒(méi)有慈善的面貌，反而充滿暴戾，粗野，邪惡的氣息。國(guó)王一看，生氣地要人把畫(huà)家拖出去鞭打。
這時(shí)，圣者聽(tīng)到驚呼聲，跑了過(guò)來(lái)，他看到這幅畫(huà)后，跪倒在地：“國(guó)王，這畫(huà)里的人，才是真實(shí)的`我啊。”國(guó)王驚詫地問(wèn)：“為什么?”圣者道：“這就是我一生掙扎著，不想去做的那個(gè)人啊。”
在這世上，沒(méi)有天生的圣者，惟有能時(shí)時(shí)刻刻自我反省，自我檢視的人，才能成為圣者。

止謗莫如自修
張恨水先生曾寫(xiě)過(guò)一篇《為人應(yīng)當(dāng)接受批評(píng)》，他說(shuō)：“生平很少和人打筆墨官司，就是人家指出我的名姓來(lái)教訓(xùn)一頓，我也不曾回復(fù)一個(gè)字。這樣做，我并非怯懦，也并非過(guò)分的容忍。我有個(gè)感想，我錯(cuò)了，止謗莫如自修。我不錯(cuò)，最好借事實(shí)來(lái)答復(fù)。這是一個(gè)辦法，也許不適合他人，但至少我自己，在做人上糾正了不少錯(cuò)誤。而三十年來(lái)的'寫(xiě)作生涯，略有寸進(jìn)，一大半也就是根據(jù)別人的批評(píng)而得的。” 恨水先生對(duì)待批評(píng)的態(tài)度，很值得當(dāng)今文化人學(xué)習(xí)。
參考譯文：
Mr.Zhang Henshui once wrote up A Man Should Accept Criticisms. In this article, he said, "I seldom deliver paper arguments with people and even write a single word in retort when someone launches a criticism by mentioning my name.
Neither does this mean that I am weak, nor over tolerant. I think if I did something wrong, the better way to against defaming is to do self-examination; if it’s not my fault, I’d rather air my opinions based on the fact. This may be not practical for other people, but at least it helps me a lot on behaving myself. During the life of my over thirty years writting, some progress I have made mostly benefits from others’ criticisms."
Mr.Zhang’s attitude to criticism is well worthy of intellectuals’ following.
