I think I could turn and live a while with the animals...
我想我可以轉(zhuǎn)而和動物生活一陣子……
They are so placid and self-contained,
動物是那樣溫和，那樣沉默寡言，
I stand and look at them sometimes half the day long.
有時候，我站在那里注視著動物，一看就是半天。
They do not sweat and whine about their condition,
動物們不為自己的處境煩惱和哀鳴，
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins.
不會躺在黑暗中徹夜不眠，為自己的.罪孽流淚。
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God,
動物們不會談?wù)撍麄儗ι现鞯牧x務(wù)而令我作嘔，
Not one is dissatisfied...
所有動物都是滿足的……
Not one is demented with the mania of owning things,
也沒有哪種動物為滿足自己的占有欲而發(fā)狂，
Not one kneels to another,nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago.
動物不會向另一種動物，或是幾千年前的同類屈膝膜拜。
Not one is respectable or industrious over the whole earth.
也沒有哪種動物是超乎一切的最可敬的或是最勤勞的。
