Jo: In Real English, we look at words and phrases that you might not find in your dictionary.
Sun Chen: 英語(yǔ)當(dāng)中老是有特別多的習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)。牢牢把握這些個(gè)常用說(shuō)法，還有俚語(yǔ)，對(duì)你學(xué)習(xí)英語(yǔ)肯定大有幫助。
Jo: And today’s slang word is ‘flop’ F-L-O-P flop
Sun Chen: 這個(gè)詞兒的本來(lái)意思就是撲通的`一下倒下。
Jo: Yes, but here it’s a noun, used to talk about something which wasn’t very successful.
Sun Chen: 這么說(shuō)這個(gè)詞當(dāng)名詞使的時(shí)候，說(shuō)的是什么事兒不太成功。那都用這個(gè)詞兒說(shuō)哪些事兒不成功呢?
Jo: It’s often used to talk about entertainment – films, plays, pop songs and so on which weren’t very successful.
Sun Chen: 要想知道怎么來(lái)用這個(gè)俚語(yǔ)flop，我們來(lái)聽聽下邊這段。

Despite huge investment, the latest film from the production company was a complete flop in terms of box-office sales, and critical reviews.
Sun Chen: 這個(gè)flop，用在這兒，是說(shuō)一個(gè)雖然投資很大，但是卻并不成功的一部電影。
Jo: It was a complete flop.
Sun Chen: 那這么說(shuō)，flop這個(gè)詞兒就只能用來(lái)說(shuō)娛樂(lè)圈里的這些事兒?jiǎn)?
Jo: No, it can be used to talk about other things too, for example politics.
Sun Chen: 那我們?cè)賮?lái)聽一個(gè)例子吧!

The latest initiative launched by the government to improve living standards for the elderly has been a total flop.
Sun Chen: 在這兒，這個(gè)flop又來(lái)說(shuō)政府的一項(xiàng)舉措。
Jo: It has been a total flop.
